Risk Prevention Program - Parmalee Community, Rosebud Reservation

Create a more nurturing community better able to address high risk behaviors, which are linked to alcohol, drugs, gangs, depression, and suicide in youth and children.
Program Goal: To strengthen positive family ties, cultural identity, communication skills, and positive behaviors as part of the Takoja Niwiciyapi: Giving Life to the Grandchildren program on the Rosebud Reservation in St. Francis, South Dakota. The Takoja Niwiciyapi program was developed by the Lakota/Dakota elders as part of the Sioux Tribe Suicide Prevention Task Force Community Initiative Plan.
Descendants of Colonel Henry Maynadier are helping fund this proposal in honor of their ancestor who in 1866 was the commander of Fort Laramie. Colonel Maynadier was recognized for distinguished service on the frontier in operations against hostile Indians and accomplishing much toward bringing about peace with warring tribes. Read more.
Expected Results: The program is designed to promote cultural identity, improve communications skills, develop support networks and prevent high-risk behavior linked to alcohol, drugs, gangs, and depression. The 14-week program will impact the lives of approximately 120 youth and families.
